球墨铸铁是一种新型铸铁,它与普通铸铁的最大区别是:普通铸铁中的碳素,在金属基体内呈片状石墨分布,起着应力集中和严重破坏基体连续性的作用,所以强度不理想;而球墨铸铁中的碳素,在金属基体内呈球状石墨分布,避免了应力集中,使基体具有较好的连续性,所以机械性能接近于钢。在其些性能方面,如铸造、加工、耐磨、耐腐蚀、吸收震动等球墨铸铁还比一些锻钢和铸钢优越。因此近几年来,国外许多冶铸学者竞相研究,在理论上和铸造方法上有了很大贡献,从而为铸跌的用途开辟了新的路径。
