This article conducted a survey of patients with upper extremity defects in 1213,913 live births that were consecutively born in British Columbia from 1952 to 1984 through the Health Surveillance Registry. Found 659 cases of upper limb defects, the incidence was 5.67 / 10 000. Eight of the mothers had a history of alcohol abuse during pregnancy. The authors conducted a separate analysis of them, 6 of the 8 patients had lateral defects in the right arm or hand and the remaining 2 had ulnar defects. This study further supports that excessive alcohol consumption in pregnant women can cause fetal upper limb defects, the most common organ malformations in these live births are heart defects.
