1979年上海市的崇明中学,最先拉开了体育中考的序幕,也是中国最早实施体育中考的学校。至今有近30多年的历史。2006年至今体育中考又经历了多年的发展,其发展层次进入了更深的阶段,《中共中央国务院关于加强青少年体育增强青少年体质的意见》的下发,之后出台并大力推行的《国家学生体质健康标准》并且促使其与体育中考有机结合,各地区高度重视体育中考,增加了体育中考分值,加大了体育中考在中考总分中的权重。
