In mammalian proteins, collagen alone contains significant amounts of hydroxyproline. Degradation of collagen releases free hydroxyproline and hydroxyproline containing oligopeptides. Therefore, determination of serum and urine hydroxyproline content, can understand the body of collagen metabolism. Proline is an important raw material for collagen synthesis. In cirrhotic patients and rats, the free proline content is in parallel with the degree of liver fibrosis, so some scholars believe that the size of the free proline pool in the liver may play an important role in the regulation of collagen biosynthesis .
