谷文昌1954年担任福建东山县委书记,当时风沙肆虐,房子塌了,庄稼埋了,不少群众产生外出谋生的念头。面对这严重的自然灾害,谷文昌没有气馁,耐心地做群众的思想工作,一面进行生产自救,一面着手风沙的治理,并发出了掷地有声的誓言:“不治服风沙,就让风沙把我埋掉!”此时一位昔日的战友、当时的上级向他提出了“忠告”:不要把工作的重点放到这长期才能见效的植树上,而应该做一些能体现自己“显绩”和上级关注的工作,这对个人的“进步”有好处。并引用过去长工的一句俗话:做事不随东,累死也无功。这“东”就是解放前长工服务的“东家”,借喻为现任的上级领导。
