无论在中国还是在世界上,桂林这颗“国际旅游明珠”无疑是一个美名远播的旅游胜地。桂林是国务院首批公布的国家重点风景游览城市和历史文化名城(1979年1月,国家领导人指出桂林市为社会主义风景游览城市;1982年2月,国务院公布桂林市为全国首批24个历史文化名城之一;1985年10月,国务院把桂林市的城市性质定为:是中国重点风景游览城市和历史文化名城);首批“中国优秀旅游城市”(1998年国家旅游局公布),世界旅游组织首推的中国四大旅游目的地城市。(2003年11月,经世界旅游组织考察,北京、西安、上海、桂林四个城市成为中国首批向世界各国推介的最佳旅游目的地城市);在全国曾获许多殊荣佳誉:“风景名胜第二”、“全国旅游重点建设城市”、“以自然景观为主的旅游胜地”等。
