OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical significance of extended high frequency for early hearing loss assessment in patients with thalassemia. Methods: Pure tone audiometry (conventional frequency plus extended high frequency) was performed on 60 patients (117 ears) with thalassemia who underwent treatment in our hospital from September 2013 to November 2014. The hearing changes were observed before and after treatment. Results: The pure tone threshold before and after treatment in 60 patients (117 ears) with thalassemia was (15.72 ± 11.62) dBHL and (15.40 ± 12.24) dBHL, respectively, with no significant difference (P> 0.05) Before treatment increased to 18,19kHz most obvious, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The monitoring of early hearing impairment in extended high-frequency thalassemia patients may be more sensitive than normal frequency listening.
