种子是一个生活植物的原始体。当种子萌发时,生命活动迅速加强;此时对外界反应非常敏感,可塑性很大。因此,播种前种子处理常常可以引起胚部原生质的深刻变化,改变其生理特性。这种改变能通过细胞分裂带到整个成长的植物体中去,再经人为的控制,使其朝有利的方向发展。国外对番茄种子变温锻炼进行过很多研究。阿.耶.沃罗诺娃(1946)曾指出,种子变温锻炼能提高番茄植株的抗寒性,早熟增产,果实变大。朴.阿.金杰里(1959)等人指出,种子锻炼能提高植株的抗性、光合作用强度和酶活性,能提高原生质的稳定性
