形成于“轴心时代”的元典命题“人文以化成天下”奠定了中和人文精神的基础内涵。这种人文精神，在人与自然的关系上，顺自然而以人为本；在人与社会关系上，循人伦而以和为本；在人与自我关系上，重体验而以乐为本。“循天道，尚人文”的人文倾向、“致中和，得其分”的中和境界以及“崇礼乐，赞化育”的美育工夫，这三者构成了中华人文精神由内而外、由体而用，由境界而工夫的基本内涵和总体风貌，也成了中华传统精神文化共通的精神和最基本和最突出的特征。
