1982年的一天清早,18岁的李践像以往一样在翠湖边练习太极 拳,他注意到,不远处有一个金发碧眼的外国男人在盯着他看。 他心想,一定又是一个好奇的外国人。可连续三天,这个外国人都会准时出现在他练习的地点。第四天,这个外国人穿着一身跆拳道练习服向他走过来,李践暗暗笑了,心想,原来又是一个来比武的对手啊！李践已经记不清有多少武林中人来找他比武了。但外国人还是第一次。可让他意外的是,这个外国人到他身边后,先是施了一礼,然后用不是很纯熟的汉语说道:“我们交个朋友,互拜为师,你教我太极拳,我教你跆拳道。”原来这个美国人是韩国跆拳道教练,被李践习练的太极拳吸引,很想学习。
