随着时代的发展,人们对于现代设计的认知与实践也在不断地进步与完善。能源危机、生态恶化等使人们逐渐意识到设计的复杂性和深远性。于是“可持续设计”、“绿色设计”、“生态设计”等的设计理论被提出,各种相关设计实践也在同步的进行。以住宅设计为例,建筑设计应当摒弃传统的孤立模式,单纯从建筑本体出发、以技术手段解决能耗问题(技术的运用建立在能源的消耗之上,以另一种能源消耗方式解决原有的能源消耗,其出发点本身就存在着矛盾),低技术生态住宅应当最大限度的以不伴随能源消耗的物理方式出发,考虑建筑与周围环境的相互关系,建筑内部环境与外部环境之间的关系;建筑与参与到其中的人的相互作用以及对环境的影响;建筑在自身的整个生命周期对环境的影响;
