Hughes Aircraft Company has just released a new Infrared Automatic Seeker for the US Army Fiber Guided Anti-tank Missile FOG-M. This “revolutionary” automatic seeker is equipped with an infrared detector that uses a monolithic circuit for the first time (on a missile). This focal plane matrix contains 65,536 probing elements, which are arranged as an embedded photocathode of 256 x 256 elements on a piece of gold-doped gold. The chip multiplexes the signals from each detector element to form a complete image of the target being targeted and is then converted to a video signal (fiber optic transmission) for display on the screen so that the shooter can be made before and after launch Detect and assign missiles to targets.
