The groundwater seal rock cave oil depot is a new oil storage technology. It is based on the principle that oil is light and heavy, and oil and water are not mixed. Water pressure is used to seal the oil in caves so as to prevent leakage. Therefore, it is not necessary to use steel plates for welding tanks or other linings. Simply excavating the caves can directly store oil in the caves. China’s first groundwater seal rock cavern depot project was designed by the Ministry of Commerce Design Institute. The underground professional revolutionary teachers and students of the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Tsinghua University participated in part of the design work. The Hubei Commercial Building Installation Engineering Company was responsible for the construction and received the industrial equipment of Zhejiang Province. The installation company and more than 50 units worked together and took only two years and four months to complete production and put into production in October 1976. After four months of oil storage observations, it proved that the project was a success. It has many advantages such as low investment, low construction cost, quick construction, less land occupation, small loss, three materials savings, safety concealment, favorable combat readiness and so on. Compared with cavernous tanks of the same size, it can save investment by 40%, save steel by 80%, cement by 55%, shorten the construction period by 2/5, and create a new way for our country to build oil depots sooner or later.
