铁凝的短篇小说《树下》(见本刊今年第二期)是一篇耐读的艺术精品,它为读者提供了广阔的思考空间:通过老于这个艺术形象,你既可以感受到作品对传统文化的肯定,也可以感受到对传统文化的批判,还可以看到当代中国知识分子尤其是教师生活处境的艰难与企盼。……但我认为,作品的深层涵义在于,通过老于这个形象,充分表现了中国的传统文化与现代生存意识的尖锐冲突,从一个特定角度,预示了中国现代文化的某种走向。

From a certain point of view, this indicates a certain trend in China’s modern culture.
