The project is funded by the International Olympic Committee, the Chinese Olympic Committee and BOCOG with a donation of 800 million U.S. dollars after the Wenchuan earthquake. The idea of the design is to transform the traditional sports school design into an open urban sports park. The cross-shaped building plan divides outdoor sports venues into three areas: track and field, basketball / volleyball and tennis. The school building, the arena, the swimming pool and the tennis court expand in 4 directions in the cross plane.
