The Republic of Uzbekistan lies in the hinterland of Asia, bordering Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the east, adjoining Kazakhstan on the west and north, and Afghanistan on the south and Turkmenistan on the south. An area of 447,400 square kilometers. The population of 20.7 million (at the beginning of 1991), after the Russian Federation and Ukraine, ranks third among the Commonwealth of Independent States. The main ethnic groups in the Republic are Uzbeks (about 65% of the total number of republics, the following braches are the ratio of the total population of the nation and the republic), Russians (10.3%), Tatars (4.02%), Kazakhs (3.8%), Tajiks (3.68%), Karakalpaks (1.84%), and Koreans (1.01%).
