以胸径、树高为因子的二元材积表是森林蓄积量测算最常用的一种数表,同时也是蓄积量抽样估计中不可控误差的主要来源.众所周知,立木蓄积量是胸径、树高、干形的函数,此三者通常被称为材积测定“三要素”。胸径和树高是可以测定的,而干形则只能间接控制,其本身又受林木内外在因素的多重影响,客观存在很大差异。由于干形不规则和多变给蓄积量的测算造成困难,并使之复杂化.因此,对干形的分析研究是编制高质量材积表的理论依据.
