It is expected that future climate change will cause an increase in winter temperatures, which may result in a decrease in snow accumulation in lower and middle-northern temperate regions. Changes in soil temperature and water conditions affect the total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON) leaching. In this study, experiments were conducted on snow cover in small source catchments in mountainous wilderness areas in southern Norway to quantify the effects of TOC and TON concentrations and fluxes in runoff. Control experiments include snow removal (to promote soil freezing) and isolation (to prevent soil freezing). Snow removal resulted in higher concentrations of TOC and TON but decreased flux. Isolation caused a small decrease in TOC concentration and flux. The results show that the depth of the snow changes and the soil temperature also changes, so the TOC and TON leaching in the mountain wilderness area will not be seriously affected.
