Stomach acid not only breaks down the food we eat, but it also controls the small health tracking devices in our body. Scientists have invented a small, rechargeable volt-ampere cell that, if swallowed into the abdomen, will function in the gastrointestinal tract and release electricity when it comes in contact with stomach acid. This battery provides both power for sensors that measure key indicators of heart rate and breathing, as well as power for internally dosed devices. Volt batteries may evoke high school memory in the laboratory: because the lemon battery is also citric acid between the two electrodes
