本文从辽祖州石室作为辽太祖耶律阿保机灵柩的权殡之所这一论断出发,对祖州石室这一奇特的巨石建筑形制的源头进行探索。南宋楼钥《北行日录》中所记其在使金途中见到的尸棚,即契丹人的停尸设施,辽祖州石室则是此类尸棚的高级形式,是契丹少数大贵族尸体或灵柩的权殡之所。祖州石室之类的尸棚在形制、质料、结构等方面,又受到了辽东大石棚的影响。而唐代贵族葬具——石椁,对祖州石室之类作为契丹贵族灵柩权殡之所的影响,也是显而易见的。在阿保机建国前后即已信奉佛教的情况下,祖州石室的形制亦当受到了佛教石窟寺的影响。
