Bertrand Gadenne (1951 -) is the forerunner of French experimental images. In 2015 he was awarded the highest honor of the French art and culture, the Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres, . He began his career as an artist in the late 1970s by devoting himself to the creation of experimental films through the use of ultra-8mm film cameras to think about the media characteristics of the film, the spatial presentation, the relationship between humans and the world and so on. Beginning in 1983, he intercepts symbolic fragments from the continuous real world, such as human beings, animals, vegetables, ores, etc. to explore the possibilities presented to the natural world. In the process, he explored the use of projection equipment ingenuity to incorporate material elements (weight, heat, light, air flow) into the artistic field of view through the immaterial nature of projected images. He gives the projection screen a degree of freedom for the audience to experience, through the viewer’s hand, the vibrating napkin, the screen’s suspension, the flowing lines, the surface of the building, and the like. In such a unique way, Bertrand Garner’s art gives the audience a reflection on the experience of time: the non-permanence of existence, the passage of things, the appearance and disappearance of images, and so forth. In addition, he also endeavored to include every element of performance, including the audience of the exhibition, in the scope of his work. This time his trip to China has two main purposes: First, he was invited by E-Art Alliance of French Arts to attend a two-month resident creation and teaching work in Hangzhou, China; another purpose was to provide good Zhuzhu Cultural Center to carry out specialized art creation projects. This lecture is part of his creative and teaching work in Hangzhou. Among them, he made a reflection on his own creation and gave his artistic experience to share.
