Canada: The past few years have been particularly challenging for the forestry sector in New Brunswick. The housing market in the United States collapsed, demand for newsprint was sluggish, and large numbers of pulp and paper industry players relocated to South America and Asia. Therefore, the Canadian forestry sector must recognize that diversification of the means of acquiring forest value should be made as soon as possible. In order to achieve the profitability of the forest industry, to rejuvenate rural communities and to achieve resilient ecosystems, Canada needs to invest in new processes, products and market research and technologies that generate the full potency of forests. For more than 40 years, both Conservatives and Liberal governments have spent most of their forestry investment on maintaining rural employment. They use large sums of money and loans in support of afforestation and in factories that are declining
