This article describes an improved long-term intravenous infusion to rats. A medical silicone tube with an inner diameter of 0.02 cm and an outer diameter of 0.037 cm was inserted through the femoral vein and the other end was led out from the middle of the tail of the rat through a subcutaneous tunnel and then out of the cage to be connected with the infusion pump. Silicone tube between the middle of the tail and the cage wall should be covered with a rigid polyethylene tube of sufficient length to allow proper rat movement. With a wide tape affixed to the tail, one end tied to a small metal ring, and then the metal ring fixed in the cage edge. The unit is then protected by a 50 ml plastic syringe barrel and secured to the root of the rat tail by a perforated strip. Squirrel cage depth should not be less than 8in. This device prevents the rat from hitting the cannula while allowing it to maintain its normal posture and perform proper walking
