To meet the consumer demand for thinner and lighter audio cassette recorders, Matsushita Electric has recently developed the “Da Vinci” brand cassette recorder. This recorder is only 19.8 mm thick, thinner than the existing thinnest recorder (28 mm) and weighs only 455 grams. Mechanical problems are a big problem in the development of such thin cassette recorders. In order to solve this problem, the internal gear drive system and multilayer circuit board system are used. At the same time, thinner motors and smaller heads were also developed, and manufacturing processes were almost completely revised.
