A three-year pilot study was conducted on the feasibility of coal-water slurry on a GE-7FDL locomotive diesel engine using a single-cylinder engine. A detailed study of the fuel firing, burning situation. Experiments have shown that under normal engine operation with a suitable fuel injection device, coal-water slurry fuel can ignite smoothly and give full play to engine power. The fuel consumption rate comparable to the diesel engine. And, NO_x and CO emissions less. As expected, injectors, piston rings and cylinder liners wear out with standard materials. However, the wear characteristics were significantly improved when using hardened materials selected from bench tests. With further efforts, the durability of engines that use coal slurry may be comparable to that of diesel-burning engines.
