China has begun to detail a new approach to global governance with a growing capacity to shape the international structure in its interests. Response to Chinese global govemance as a challenge or an opportunity largely depends on an understanding ofChinese intentions andcapacity. The main goal of this research, situated within the nascent English-language literatureon Chinese global governance, is to better understand the Chinese approach to globalgovemance. Arguing for a typology-based methodology to analyze the core concepts of Chineseglobal govemance and their relation to the dominant values ofthe intemational syrstem thisresearch seeks a more rigorous method to assess Chinese intentions in the intemational systemby comparing the core concepts ofglobal govemance of China and the west. Based on thisapproach, this research also argues for the need to shifi the debates on the main challenges of Chinese intemational relations, specifically global govemance from an intemational andstructural perspective, to one that knits together a more comprehensive understanding oftbe full- spectrum challenges and constraints on an emerging Chinese global govemance policy. As aresult, this research also lays out a framework of analysis to understand both the dichotomies and capacity constraints on the international and domestic levels that Chinas faces in carrying out its global govemance agenda.
