Lao - Chinese relations started officially on 25 May 1961 that both countries were verycooperative in promoting political, economic and cultural ties, during the cold war period, Laosand other countries in Indochina had very difficult time to fight with US troop which was againstcommunist expansion to Southeast Asia, China saw this issue and provided an immediate support.Recently, China is one of the powerful countries in the world and it is currently the secondlargest of the world economy after the US In 2007, Chinas foreign policy is to cooperate withcountries in South East Asia under the Five principles for peace and stability of region Thisthesis analyzes the Laos - China in multilateral cooperation and relationship in the ASEANFrameworks. It is also aimed to provide an understanding of Chinas engagemcnt with SoutheastAsia, paflicularly Laos.
In the First Indochina War, after Laos and Metnam won against the French, US feared theexpansion of Communism from China and former Soviet Uruon. The US sent its troopsIndochina to interfere all communist activities and the Peoples Republic of China (PRC)supported Laos, Met Nam and Cambodia. The US continued to support Laos in the SecondIndochina War or Vietnam War until it got independent from the US. Tlus thesis examines thehistory of Laos and how Lao-Chinese relations started by the support of China in terms of aidduring the combat of foreign invaders.
Laos and China have played a crucial role in ASEAN stage; Laos played an important role to help China in explaining to other ASEAN member countries that Cluna was not a threat but an opportunity. Laos has been able to help nurture understanding and Wst between ASEAN and China in the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) which at the same time is a contribution to regional confidence building measures, Furthermore, Cluna also played very important role to cooperate, contribute and support ASEAN in the world stage, this thesis analyzes the role of Laos and China and the cooperation between China and ASEAN to sustain the stability ofpeace and economic in this region.
In addition to the cooperation ofboth sides, two countries have deeply cooperate in Economic sector. As Laos has no access to sea, the Lao govemment has a plan to be a land link country in which China can benefit from in terms of transporting goods. For example, Chinese goods can be transferred from Yunnan, China to Bangkok, Thailand, Cambodia and Southem Met Nam through aos, in this part will analyze the present cooperation which is big contribute to the Lao economy.
Finally, the Thesis also focuses on the future direction of Laos and China andASEAN - China, which both side have been discuss and prepare to take action. This will enhance the stability of economic in region, political and security and society between China andASEAN and Laos. Clearly, the future cooperation plan between Laos and China in ASEANprovide mutual benefits and deeply understanding.
In short, the Thesis analyzes the role of Laos and China in the ASEAN frameworks, in order to my work expediencies and had interviewed with the right person who has been working and in chart of this issue.
