Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP),one of controlled radical polymerization processes,has been applied to synthesis of various bio-related materials.ATRP has been successfully carried out under biorelevant conditions.It has been applied to polymerization of water soluble vinyl monomers,generating (co)polymers with predetermined molecular weights and designed molecular weight distribution.Various bioconjugates have been prepared by grafting from proteins and enzymes but also by click reactions.Bioconjugates with covalently linked synthetic polymers to nucleic acids were prepared.Also,polyplexes with siRNA were successfully prepared and delivered.The (co)polymers made by ATRP have many potential applications as components of biomedical materials.Examples of design,synthesis,characterization and applications ofnanostructured materials enabled by ATRP used for drug and gene delivery will be presented [1-7].
