Cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium are the components of the cathode active materials in lithium-ion batteries. In order to develop an environment-friendly hydrometallurgical process to recover these valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries, leaching with organic acid followed by precipitation was employed. In the first step, active components in the spent batteries were dissolved by leaching with a mixture of malic acid and H2O2 at 80oC.An optimum leaching condition was obtained from the results.Adding oxalic acid to the leaching solution resulted in oxalate precipitates,CoxNiyMnz,,while Al,Cu,Fe and Li were not precipitated,These precipitates (CoxNiyMnz) were fabricated to the cathode active material after heat-treatment with the mixture of Li2CO3 at 800℃.The characteristics of oxalate precipitates before and after heat treatment was compared by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).
