Local and State Input to Develop Direction for a 4-H Youth Development Program

  In the development of high quality 4-H youth development programs that meet the needs of youth, families, and communities, it is important to receive input from stakeholders because it ties the program priorities back to what is needed by the community.Stakeholders can be defined as anyone who has a vested interest in the programs to be delivered, including youth, parents, community leaders, and university faculty.Stakeholder input can take a variety of forms and strategies are tailored to the audience.In the U.S., 4-H youth development faculty typically employ advisory committees, made up of local stakeholders (e.g.program participants, key community leaders, volunteers, agency representatives).We encourage 4-H educators to include youth voice on the advisory committees and have been working to help adults understand how to work effectively with youth as partners in program development.These advisory groups work with the educator to determine program priorities, based on their knowledge and perception of community needs.
