An investigation was made of reactions in the Ti-Ta-B-C system using spark-plasma sintering(SPS)technique.The reaction between raw components at temperatures higher than 1700℃ is used to promote densification rather than grain-growth.High temperature reactive spark plasma consolidation ensures formation of(Ta,Ti)C solid solutions and leads to microstructure refinement as compared to monolithic TaC and TiB2 ceramics consolidated by SPS at identical temperatures.
