Orchidaceae(orchids),with more than 20,000 species,is the largest family of monocots.They have great economic values because of their large,diverse,colorful,and long-lived flowers.Five major subfamilies,Apostasioideae,Cypripedoideae,Epidendroideae,Orchidoideae,and Vaniloideae,have previously been recognized.The latter three is distinguishable from the former two by having the fusion of both stamens and pistil into a single reproductive organ termed the column.Consequently,the latter three subfamilies are called monandrous orchids.However,recent molecular phylogenetics maintained that monandrous orchids are paraphyletic,suggesting that the columns of orchids have evolved at least twice.
