Any kind of organic material incorporated into the soil represents a potential way of sequestration, including a) cover crops, b) catch crops (winter growing crop to reduce nitrate-N leaching), c) trap crops (biocide effect) management, d) floor permanent grass management, e) ground pruning wood, f) organic mulching, g) biochar. The latter known as charcoal, is becoming available in high amounts. It is the by-product of the pyrolisis, the burning in absence of oxygen, of organic materials, including wood.Charcoal, rich in C, may be incorporated into the soil with the purpose to sequestrate C and improve soil fertility (i.e.avoid N leaching). The most environment friendly fertilizer management includes the application of organic wastes such as by-products from agro-food industry related processes (mainly destined for landfill or incineration) that, beside beeing a good source of organic matter, could be a way of recycling of material and C sequestration. The application of compost, obtained by mixing organic domestic wastes and urban green management, at a rate of 10 t ha-1 year-1 allowed a tree yield similar to that of mineral fertilized trees, increased the organic matter soil concentration by 4-fold with a C sequestration of about 2.7 t ha-1 year-l.In a mature pear orchard, the by-products from apple juice, applied as organic fertilizer, promoted the soil biomass C..
