Charophytes in India are cosmopolitan in distribution and are abundantly present as noixous weed in fresh water bodies and rice fields.This group of macrophytic green algae possess morphological complexities and is highly diversified.Various Indian charophytologists,including the present authors made attempts to explore charophycean biodiversity on morphological,cytological,C-banding,karyotypic differentiation and biochemical grounds.Present investigations are based on the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA sequences in few Indian species belonging to the genus Chara and genus Nitella for the first time.Molecular characterization involved monomorphic and polymorphic bands on agarose gel,band sharing frequencies,band frequencies,genetic distance and genetic relatedness.Based on these parameters,a phylogenetic tree was drawn to summarize their inter and intra generic relationships.
