This work stems from the need for statistical shape analysis of open curves in 2D or 3D space.By the abstractions such as ignoring local thicknesses and extracting centerlines,fiber tracs (e.g.neuronal and muscle fibers) and tubular tracts (e.g.blood vessels and digestive tubes) can be viewed as 3D open curves,and a trail pattern in space left behind by some movement,for example,handwriting on paper can be viewed as 2D open curves.And a part of an outline of 2D object is a 2D open curve.So,an appropriate description of open curves may enables elucidation of functionality or development of fiber and tubular tracts,2D partial shape anlysis,and quantitative handwriting analysis.Here,we focus on open-curve shape description appropriate in statistical shape analysis of open curves.In many cases of curve-shape analysis,applying some parametric model to a curve,the curve is mapped to a point in the parameter space,and the analysis is performed in the parameter space.
