According to a research report by KMI, a market research firm, by the end of 1989, the United States will deploy nearly 146,419 kilometers of fiber optic cables and more than 3 billion fibers in fiber optic cables by the end of 1989. The report notes that more than 80% of fiber optic cables are owned by Sprint, MCI and AT & T in the United States. The report also lists 15 other companies that work on long-haul fiber and lists the length of their fiber-optic network by the end of 1989. AT & T will have the longest network, nearly 48.27 million kilometers. The U.S. Sprint and MCI companies will have 31.8 million kilometers. Williams Telecommunications Group is the fourth largest network owner and will have around 19,965,400 kilometers by the end of 1989. The report states: “The type and capacity of this huge network will be a major factor in the growth of the loop and subscriber loop markets in metropolitan areas.”
