中国电影步入90年代以来,既逢到了前所未有的机遇,也面临着严峻的挑战。一方面市场经济的确立给电影的发展解脱了很多束缚,提供了很多机会,但另一方面由于电影的生存环境的改变并没有让绝大多数中国导演改变他们固有的电影观念,他们在市场面前显得很不适应,电影的发展出现了每况愈下的局面,国产片生产数量逐年下降,电影市场萎靡不振。但是冯小刚这个并非科班出身的导演,却能自1997年拍摄贺岁片《甲方乙方》以来,连续几年稳获市场票房冠军,几千万的票房不但国内导演罕有匹敌
