亚洲棉(G.arboreum L.2n=26,染色体组2A_2)我国通称中棉,早熟、结铃性强、产量较稳定、耐旱,在多雨季节烂铃少、吐絮畅、纤维粗、强度大。非洲棉(G.herbaceum L.2n=26,染色体组2A_1)我国通称草棉,植株矮小、极早熟、铃小、极耐旱。这两个栽培棉种虽然在生产上已很少应用,但育种工作者希望将其早熟、抗旱及特殊纤维品质等性状导入陆地棉[G.hirsutum L.2n=52,染色体组2(AD)_1]品种中。
