January 1 The two governments of China and Japan once again held bureau-level consultations in Beijing on the settlement of the trade dispute between China and Japan. On the 5th, Premier Zhu Rongji attended the fifth summit of leaders of ASEAN, China, Japan, South Korea (“10 + 3”) in Brunei Darussalam and made an important speech and proposed five new proposals on promoting East Asian cooperation. On the same day, Premier Zhu Rongji, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and South Korea’s President Kim Dae-jung held the third informal summit of leaders of the three countries and exchanged views on further promoting economic and trade cooperation between the three countries.
