This paper proceeds from the so-called ‘definite restriction’ of NP in existential sentence, arguing that it is fallacious for its restricted application. We attempt to explore the felicity condition of NP in existential sentences from a functional perspective, with focus on its information status. After demonstrating the compatibility of definite NP and new information, we attempt to bring out the idea that hearer-newness constitutes the felicity condition of NP in existential sentences.
