收藏在美国华盛顿佛利尔美术馆《五罗汉渡海图》,迄今鲜见讨论。本文从罗汉的缘起及其到明代中期的演变,试图阐释画中罗汉的意涵,及其和慈圣皇太后的关系,并进一步以现藏美国纽约大都会博物馆的另一幅《莲池观音图》和现存北京相关寺塔的石刻画像、首都博物馆收藏相似款识的水陆画作等交叉比照,探讨《五罗汉渡海图》是否为慈圣皇太后御笔;目前散落各地博物馆、同样出自明代后妃的相关画作,以及明代内府的诸多水陆丽,是否有可能成为明代宫廷绘画史的外一章。
