Foreign banks set up many branches in Japan under the policy of credit expansion. By the end of December 1978, there were 61 foreign banks, 81 branches and 88 agencies in Japan. Similarly, the Bank of Japan has a large network of branches abroad. There are 22 Japanese banks in the United States; 1 in Latin America; 22 in Western Europe; 9 in Asia; and 1 in other countries. By the end of 1978, 23 banks in Japan had carried out their business abroad. They had 122 branches, 148 agencies, 11 “sub” banks and 28 “sub” companies.
