渭河流经咸阳市杨陵、武功、兴平、秦都、渭城五个县区的19个乡镇,338个村庄和市区6个办事处,全长91.5公里。沿岸共有57.7万人,40.32万亩耕地。渭河两岸是咸阳市重要的工农业生产基地。建国以来,为了治理渭河,国家和群众花了大量投资,投入了400多万个工日,使两岸河岸线有115.3公里初步得到治理,修建堤防79公里,短坝944座,砌石护岸38.22公里,对稳定河势起了一定作用,但防洪标准仍然很低。
