汉高祖刘邦有一次和韩信谈论指挥能力,他问韩信:“你看我最多能指挥多少人马?”“我看陛下最多能指挥十万人马。”韩信回答说。“那么你呢?”“臣多多益善。”这是成语“多多益善”的由来。在写论文时作者驾驭材料的能力也是这样。作者如军队统帅,材料如同手下的兵将。作者的思想水平不同,所能掌握和运用材料的多寡的能力也有所不同。材料过多,超过作者驾驭的能力,就如同让一个军事指挥能力低的人,去领导一班难以驾驭的将领、指挥一个庞大的军队那样,结果可想而知。

The same goes for the author’s ability to control the material when writing his essay. The author as a military commander, the material is like a soldier. The author’s ideological level is different, the ability to master and use the amount of material is also different. Too much material, beyond the author’s ability to control, is like making a person with a low military command, leading a group of unmanageable generals and directing a large army, and the result is predictable.
