In 1956, a nickel sulphide deposit was identified in the Thompson area, 400 miles north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. International metal companies then set up a mining and tandem joint venture for development and commissioned in 1961. Following the closure of the Piopu open-pit mine in the area in the autumn of 1984, International Metal Corporation invested another 22 million U.S. dollars to establish the Thompson open-cast mine.
