RECENTLY,Meystre et al.and later Lee et al.have proposed aspectroscopy technique yielding resolution beyond the naturallinewidth.Such a possibility appears very exciting for spec-troscopists.However,their treatments either semiclassicalor quantum mechanical suffer from the same discrepancy.Forexcited levels with identical linewidths,the emission crosssection becomes infinite at resonance for a weak incident dri-ving field.It is the aim of the present work to give a uni-fied treatment of the transient line narrowing valid for anarbitrary intensity of the contrinuous beam.Also a discus-sion concerning its possible use in spectroscopy is included.
