According to the infrared and Raman spectroscopy data, the hydroxyl groups of hydroxyl silanes can be intermixed with each other to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bonding systems between hydroxysilanes and various basic compounds were only recently noticed by West et al. They compare the acidity of hydroxyl groups in hydroxy-silanes with the corresponding hydroxy-carbons (alcohols) based on the shift Δv of the O-H stretching vibration band of the hydrogen-bonding system between hydroxysilane and diethyl ether and symmetric trimethylbenzene. Because they only use two basic compounds, it is difficult to reliably compare the acidity of the hydroxyl groups in each of the hydroxysilanes.
