交通部科学研究院的等离子焊接设备,是一种较新的焊接工艺。由于其所用钍钨棒中含有1.8~2.5%的放射性物质——钍。因此,在工作时,当焊接处温度很高的情况下,除产生强烈紫外线、各种有害气体(臭氧、氧化氮和金属烟尘等)外,还会产生少量钍的粉尘。空气中放射性粉尘浓度多大?表面放射性污染多强?γ外照射强度如何?对操作人员的健康有无危害?这些都是有关部门的同志希望回答的问题。
