The American Heart Association (AHA) reports in a recent issue of Circulation that too many people spend too much time on their chairs and couches. Young, chair of the AHA working group, pointed out in his latest proposal that based on the available evidence, American adults sedentary for 6-8 hours a day. The problem worsens with age, and the AHA press release states that adults over the age of 60 spend sev- eral days of 8.5 to 9.6 hours. AHA said sedentary health is more than a heart-disease risk. Sedentary lifestyle is also associated with diabetes, impaired insulin sensitivity, and a higher risk of death for any cause. According to AHA statistics, the new report reflects a growing body of evidence that exercise is not enough to combat sedentary
