I. INTRODUCTION (I) Importance of plantations In 1967, FAO held a World Plantation conference in Canberra, Australia, discussing the growing importance of plantations for forest development and timber production. In 1965, the world’s estimated plantation area was 80 million hectares, and by 1985 it could reach more than 200 million hectares. In some countries, plantation forests have been able to provide a large part of the domestic timber production. In other countries, plantation forests have proved to have great potential for production. Most countries, including those with rich natural resources, have also acknowledged the potential and benefits of plantations.
